Cinematography in The Royal Tenenbaum's

One of the biggest things that contributes to the theme and tone of the movie is the aspects of the cinematography throughout the film.  The Royal Tenenbaums film was narrated as if it were being read like a book.  The first shot shows a book titled The Royal Tenenbaums being checked out from a library.  Then it is opened to the first page and the voice-over narration begins.  Throughout the film a title pops up with information about what will happen in this chapter giving the audience more information, thus adding more to the feeling of reading a book.  The cinematography is very important to better understand the characters. Most shots are medium shots focusing on one individual character with the subjects placed right in the middle.  As a result of this our focus is drawn to the person in the frame, causing us to pay attention to what they are doing and how they are acting.  For most of the film the color and lighting remain the same.  The scenes are very bright with warm tones with yellow, orange, and red tints.  The use of these colors and lighting result in a very cheerful and warm feel in the movie but they can also represent hate and anger.  Also the color and lighting support the theme and tone by giving it a bittersweet feeling.  There is one instance in the movie when the color changes completely and this is when Richie attempts to commit suicide.  This scene is very dark with an overwhelming blue tint.  The significance of the change in color is showing the importance of the scene but also to correlate the actions with the emotions we see on the screen.  I would rate this movie a 7/10.
